Biographical history

John F. Strauss Jr. was a Traveling Passenger Representative in the Great Northern Railway's Passenger Traffic Department in the 1950s and 1960s. During that period he accumulated over one million miles of service on the Great Northern's "Empire Builder" which gave him an in-depth familiarity with the Great Northern Railway. He grew up in a railroad family. His father was a ticket agent for the Burlington Route and one of his brothers was a Milwaukee Road engineer. Since retiring he has written and publshed several books about the Great Northern, the Milwaukee Road, the Northern Pacific and the Burlington Northern.

Scope and content

The John F. Strauss Collection includes materials on various Pacific Northwest railroads including the Great Northern, Northern Pacific, Milwaukee Road, and Burlington Northern. Items include sound recordings on vinyl, VHS format video recordings, books on railroad topics, scrapbooks on Great Northern passenger service and timetables for various railroads. Materials date between 1905 and 2008 with most from the second half of the 20th century.
