History

John F. Strauss Jr. was a Traveling Passenger Representative in the Great Northern Railway's Passenger Traffic Department in the 1950s and 1960s. During that period he accumulated over one million miles of service on the Great Northern's "Empire Builder" which gave him an in-depth familiarity with the Great Northern Railway. He grew up in a railroad family. His father was a ticket agent for the Burlington Route and one of his brothers was a Milwaukee Road engineer. Since retiring he has written and publshed several books about the Great Northern, the Milwaukee Road, the Northern Pacific and the Burlington Northern.
