Great Northern Steam Locomotive 2507 at Interbay, Washington in 1947. After recovery from the Puget Sound beach, Number 2507 was stripped of wreckage that impeded towing and returned to the Interbay roundhouse. The locomotive was eventually restored to running condition. Great Northern Steam Locomotive 2507 at Mukilteo, Washington in 1947. Steam Locomotive 2507, a Class P-2, wreck on side in Puget Sound. Notes by photographer Hal Will: 'Great Northern train Number 27, the Fast Mail, hit a landslide near Picnic Point, south of Mukilteo, Washington, in the pre-dawn hours of February 18, 1948. The engineer, Al White, and fireman, W.P. "Bill" Murphy, were both injured when a slide rolled the engine, tender and a baggage car off the track. Murphy lost a thumb when it got caught in a valve handle as Number 2507 went over the rock sea wall into Puget Sound. The Great Northern yard bull (railroad cop) tried to prevent picture taking, but I shot this one and ran fast enough to save my 4x5 camera, and my skin. [HW]'. Bill Murphy states it was the tender footplate that sliced off the tip of his thumb . Other subject classes: Stm Loco

Great Northern Steam Locomotive 2508, a Class P-2, a 4-8-2, built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1923, 29"x28" cylinders, 73" drivers, 210 psi steam pressure, 365,000 pounds weight, 54,823 pounds tractive effort. These were the workhorses in the 1920's and 1930's. Along with the 25-70-80 series, the 2500-2527 Mountains inaugarated the new Empire Builder trains, as seen here pulling Number 7 eastbound past the old Great Northern depot at Hillyard, Washington.
