It's 12:07 pm on August 22, 1988 as eastbound Burlington Northern freight Number 196 on Montana Rail Link rails prepares to enter Mullan Tunnel after crossing the Continental Divide (elevation 5,549 feet) at Blossburg, Montana. The power, as provided by a Burlington Northern Electro-Motive Division (EMD) (Electro Motive Division of General Motors) SD40-2 and a leased LMX Corporation GE (General Electric) B39-8, appears to be marginal for this train on the one-point-eight-percent grade leading up to the Divide. This GE locomotive is the last-numbered unit of 100 leased by the Burlington Northern from LMX.
