            Snow and ice-encrusted Northern Pacific diesel locomotives stand at the head of passenger train number 1, the westbound North Coast Limited, at Easton, Washington, in January 1950. The temperature is 30-below and the steam generators on the near diesel set are working hard to keep heat supplied to the trailing passenger cars.
