The Montana Historical Society is the guardian of Montana's memory. Established in 1865, one of the oldest institutions of its kind in the West, the MHS's historic collections of artifacts, photographs, and documents are exhibited in six galleries. In 1969, it became the official state Archives and the repository for state agency records of permanent value. Since the founding of the Montana Historical Society in Bannack in 1865, its historians, curators and educators have worked as a team to save and share the stories of Montana. The mission of the Montana Historical Society is to promote an understanding and appreciation of Montana?s cultural heritage.

The Missouri Pacific Historical Society, Inc. (MPHS) was organized as a not-for-profit corporation in 1980. It is chartered in the state of Missouri for the purpose of obtaining, preserving, and sharing information and material relating to the Missouri Pacific Railroad and its subsidiaries. The current MPHS is an outgrowth of a prior group which was formed in 1974. The society's area of interest includes not only the Missouri Pacific Railroad, past to present, but its predecessor railroads. These include but are not limited to Texas & Pacific; Chicago & Eastern Illinois; St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico; International Great Northern; Gulf Coast Lines; St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern; New Orleans, Texas and Mexico; Missouri-Illinois.
